How can you tame an uppity boss?

How do I keep my boss from making me work more and more hours?

Something to Say?
Speak Up!

How about inviting a few of your co-workers over for the evening, renting "Nine-to-Five" with Dolly Parton, making some popcorn, and having a good laugh (and maybe a good conversation about your own situations)? That might break the ice, build some bonds, and help you personally get past the anger and frustration you are feeling. Then you might think of more "on-the-job" ways to take back your dignity and self-respect. The University of Minnesota women made up buttons reading "This University Works Because We Do." Would something like that go over at work?

You're also blessed in Atlanta with one of the very best central labor bodies in the country. The County Labor Council is progressive, active, and imaginative. Give their chief officer, Stewart Acuff, a call and ask him out for a cup of coffee. See what he has to say. He could put terrific resources at your fingertips. And he would be excited to hear about the employment environment at Emory.

And keep in touch with me. As a college professor, I'm especially interested in the labor situations on college campuses, from cafeteria workers and custodians to clerical workers and librarians, to say nothing of full-time and part-time faculty and student workers.
