It's not clear to me whether you think they are
really into this garbage themselves, or if they feel trapped, perhaps
with
less anger than you, but trapped nonetheless. You need to feel them out,
one
on one, gradually, and come to an assessment of who's ready to break out
of
the mold.
Other university workers have asked themselves this question in the past fifteen years and they've come up with some pretty exciting answers. Indeed, the unionization of college and university clerical employees has been one of the few bright spots in the labor movement. Using feminist insights about organizing and recognizing the increasing need for women to make a decent wage and be treated fairly on the job, clerical workers have organized at Yale, Harvard, the University of Minnesota, the University of Illinois, and many other schools. You might check out the recent books on Yale by Toni Gilpin and Harvard by John Hoerr. There's a lot to learn from those experiences. Now that might seem like a lot to bite off. So, it makes sense to start small. Can you find a way to take back a little bit of your own dignity and self-respect in the midst of this Bosses' Day hoopla? Often, some humor can help do the trick. It seems unlikely to me that you can scuttle the event, and I fear that direct intervention on your part might only further isolate you. |
