Speak Up!

What can I do?

Answer I think the most disturbing letters I get are from people who work for lawyers. I've always wondered whether a disproportionate number of jerks become lawyers, or if there is something in the legal education process that turns ordinary men and women into jerks. Well, I guess by the time you and other workers have to deal with them, it doesn't really matter what made them jerks; they just are!

There are a lot of confrontational ways that you could handle your situation, but let's try something more indirect, something that might be even more beneficial for you in the long run. It seems to me that you have let your boss assume that you have nothing better to do with your time than to spend it on him. You need to find other ways to occupy your time.

Why not find a friendly little coffee shop in the vicinity of your office? Stop there at 7:30 AM, with your newspapers in hand. Maybe you'll even find some "regulars" there who will have interesting perspectives on current events to share with you. Maybe they'll be interested in your take, too. This would get you out of the house, into the world, but not into the environment dominated by your yucky boss.
