Convince me! My reading of history and how the political process works shows me that the hourly laws we have now came after it had been won by workers in the street. Unions were winning contracts with overtime pay, so the law was passed so employers could say "You don't need unions, the law protects you." Someone with a different view, SPEAKUP! : : : : I agree! The fact that employers can force you to work unlimited hours is outrageous, especially when you consider what a pro-business policy that is. I mean, instead of hiring more workers (and paying more insurance benefits and so on) they just squeeze the ones they have. I wish workers would get together and speak out. If all workers voted, legislators would have to listen to us. Then, we could change that policy. We need a "no overtime" movement. If you want the other side of the coin, go to healthcare, where hours are being constantly cut. We are being penalized for going 5-10 minutes over our shift by losing one position, and having one position cut 1 1/2 hours. I don't think we have safe staffing now, and this will make it worse. We are give a PPD (per patient day) staffing ratio that is much too low for our acuity, and expected to get out on time like we were running machines that we could just shut down and walk away from. As far as I'm concerned, it sucks both ways, as mandatory overtime, and as cutting hours. But unless we have strong unions or strong legislation, I don't see it changing. And I can see why people put up with it, as many jobs as are being exported. Wish I could wave a magic wand, and go back to the '50 when business was in business to serve a need in the community, and not to make money for global investors. Follow Ups
