These groups-which called themselves "COSH" (committees on occupational safety and health) -- wrote grants for their own institutional support and sought funding from unions. But they pledged to work with non-unionized and unionized workers alike. They anticipated -- quite correctly -- that there would be a sizeable distance between the letter of the law and its actual enforcement. The deterioration of the political atmosphere around labor protections and regulations since 1980 has made matters only worse. All American workers are fortunate that activists launched these groups in the 1970s.

Many of these groups still exist today and lucky for you, there are several in California.
