While there are people making lots of money off your hard work, Matt,
there are so many women and men in your situation that some of them are
starting to do something about it. Some have turned to unions in their
efforts to gain fairer treatment. In some cities, activists have launched
projects to reach out to "freelancers" like you. Greensburg, South
Carolina
has CAFE, the Carolina Alliance for Fair Employment, and Boston has the
Contingent Workers' Center. At this stage of the game, they're mostly
working out what sort of benefits, rights, and protections they should
demand, as well as who should be pressuring employers (contingent workers
themselves, existing unions, and/or community organizations). Their end
goal
is to develop strategies to bring about legislation and regulation to
protect workers like you. If you'd like to make contact with some of
these
people, send an email to a friend of mine in Boston (eleary@bu.edu).
There are also "freelancers" who have discovered each other around the
country and are communicating about their situations. Some have found
that
humor can be an important tool in learning how to survive. The best
expression of this is a hot little 'zine called Temp Slave. You
can
