Community
of Practice Overview Remember when the superbowl had cola commercials during halftime? When disks were floppy and Wired was for nerds? Remember your phone bill? If you do, you probably remember the sense of excitement, the spirit of experimentation that launched the World Wide Web in 1995. If you don't, you may well look around at the Web today and wonder: what's missing? While there were a number of truly innovative and amazing projects springing up on the Web in the early days, and while we acknowledge there is still a fresh crop emerging even today, it seems that in the rush to IPO (which was not a verb in '95), in the flurry of e-everything, and the mania of dot.it all, the space for creatively experimenting with this medium and moving it forward has been narrowed. At Web Lab, we're dedicated to propping it open. We have in mind an initiative that would connect those who are interested in innovation on the Web and offer them space to experiment, critique, collaborate, commiserate, celebrate and expound on ideas and trends, tools and approaches. We call it a Community of Practice. Practice, as in try and try again. Practice as in makes perfect. Practice as in what you preach. Since the history of Web development has finally disabused most of us of the "Built it and they will come" delusion, we'd like to get your input. Web Lab recognizes that community isn't something to be imposed on anyone; it's a bottom up kind of affair. So we're offering to host this one and give it some shape, but we need you to fill in the spaces. Take a minute and tell us what you'd like to see. Go ahead, think big! |
