I work in a public high school in Washington DC. I wanted to work in education so I could become part of the solution. I have watched them graduate students who have missed as many as 70 days of class, who have not met the requirements for graduation, who are 21 years old, still seniors in high school and are graduated because it's about time for them to move on. I am powerless to change this. When I raise concerns I am told "We are in the business of graduating students." I have become part of the problem.
