Often when you can't get a raise, you can get your title changed.--Often as far as this goes is your boss's desk--though it depends on where you work. But Assistant Editor sounds much better than Copy Editor or Writer (if you want to move up in the editing line). If you frame it right, your boss will feel like they're giving you something for nothing, when actually, they'regiving you a ticket to a better job.
