Obligation to Work Posted by: Wendy on December 09, 1998 at 19:20:19: It's interesting to read about the growing phenomenon of employee "value adding" - the polite euphemism for working extra unpaid hours. I live in Australia and find that it is now simply expected of white collar workers. My previous place of employment was a heavy engineering works and the joke amongst office staff was that we'd be better off on the shop floor because we'd at least be paid for our overtime and we would have the right to strike! In Australia we are experiencing shortages in basic human services and amenities, in the face of increasing corporatisation ... I wonder if it is simply a case of enough of us saying "enough"!? I've never begrudged putting in a few extra hours to help get through an urgent task, but I have a real concern with the fact that I could be perceived as a letting the team down if I choose to adhere to the terms of my employment.
