: A basic question may seem ludicrous, but would it be best to "attempt" to be fired and hope for a severence package or simply resign?

I was in the same boat as you a month ago; in a job I hated, working for people I hated. I elected to resign, and gave i months notice, so I could look for not just another job, but another career, and still have income. I ultimately elected to resign knowing I had no destination in mind, which is not something I recommend at all.

The kicker was that even though I resigned, I was asked to leave well before the day I specified to be my last. They have, of course paid me through that date, but I actually think resigning was for the best. I wouldn't want to explain to potential employers why I was fired from a job, when I know I just should have resigned.

I suppose in the end, resigning with no job lined up meant saving me sanity, and that alone has been worth the uncertainty.
