Workers in Ireland

Ireland is supposed to have a highly successful economy - the famous Celtic Tiger.
But the working people who created the boom are not benefiting. Instead Ireland is more divided on class lines than ever before.
Take, for example, the building industry. House prices have shot up and the building companies are making enormous profits. But over the last three years 41 workers have died on the sites because of the failure to implement safety laws. The maximum fine on a builder is only £1,500.
Quite simply the building bosses know that it is cheaper to take risks than care for workers lives.

It is the same story throughout industry. Wages of workers have been held down under Partnership 2,000 and there are ever increasing demands for 'flexibility'. No wonder many complain of the stress and pressure they are under.
By contrast, the rich are doing very well. Taxes on profits are already the lowest in Europe and will fall to a mere 12% by the year 2010. This means that the big banks will be paying less in tax than a young worker in a fast food outlet.
And as if that was not bad enough, the rich engage in wholesale tax evasion and corruption.
The McCracken Tribunal has shown that the former Taoiseach Charles J Haughey lived off bribes that were paid out of a fund set up to evade tax.
It is time that all this changed. Instead of just tinkering with the system, we need revolutionary change that is going to shift the resources back to the majority of working people.
