I BEAT THE BOSS
Posted by: Joshua on July 28, 1998 at 15:12:34:

I did it! I beat the boss at his own game!
I worked at a coffee shop for quite a while. The environment was one of politics, and I was quite successful. Of course, the boss felt the need to keep a watchful eye on his employees.
Hidden cameras, two way mirrors, and spies were all about. Thankfully, I was smart enough to lay low and play along. Then I was promoted to another store that he owned. He was rarely going to be in the store I was going to, and as I transfered, I was told to do what it took to increase business. I had authority, but no tools to do the job he wanted.
Well, my first day there, I got out on the street and did some advertising. I did quite a bit of that.
Then, I brought in basketball (and other sports) tickets that I had been given. I had give-a-ways, and even increased our advertising. I did this all out of my own pocket, knowing full well that the boss wouldn't spring for such needed things.
Business increased dramatically. I kept detailed charts and graphs of how sales went up AFTER I started doing my thing. I kept very organized books...I was in charge of them, after all.
One day, the boss walks in. He looks around, and seeing all the people in the store, he says to me, "I don't know what you did, but you have to fix the store. Put it back the way it was."
See, both stores HAD to be identical. I told him that business increased because of the new look, and that it didn't hurt anything to be different. Needless to say, he wasn't happy. But since there were people around, he didn't do anything.
When I opened the next morning, I found the store re-arranged. He had come in the night and put things back the way they had always been. Space was not being used efficiently anymore, and the place looked horrible.
I promptly switched things back to the way I had them. No man puts me under their foot and gets away with it.
An emergency staff meeting was declared later that week when he learn... (truncated)
