The students have been chosen from magnet communications and medicine programs at Bartram High School in southwest Philadelphia based on financial need, academic promise, tenacity, grades, school attendance, desire to attend college, and family permission.

Philadelphia Futures started in January 1989 to provide the means and motivation for Philadelphia youth to stay in school and prepare for college and careers.
