CATACLYSM:
Glimpses of the End of the World

Full Description | Team Biographies

Cataclysm is an interactive online theater piece exploring the collective fears of humanity at the turn of the millennium and what these fears tell us about ourselves. Using an innovative combination of the Web and MUDspace, visitors begin at Jung's Retreat, a bar tended by Carl Jung, and then enter one of seven New Years Eve disaster dramas in which they can interrogate the actors, explore the sets, handle the props, and become a part of the story.

When asked where he came up with the crazy idea of combining Millenialism, Carl Jung, and a Williamsburg, VA-like narrative MUD, Project Director Brian Clark proudly states, "I personally planned to make this the most challenging proposal." Web Lab is delighted to confirm that Clark more than achieved his goal.

"At first, we had no idea what he was talking about," said Web Lab supervising producer Barry Joseph, "But the more we spoke with Brian and explored his ideas, the more we were convinced he was on to something quite brilliant and path-breaking."

Cataclysm offers seven different millenialist environments, the first one exploring the relationship between our utter dependancy on both technology and the financial market. Beginning three hours before the turn of the century, fear of the year 2000 computer bug sends Wall Street into a tailspin. As midnight arrives, and the Time Square ball touches down, Manhattan is cast into darkness as the power system fails and New York City is thrown into chaos.
